Children are increasingly suffering from the metabolic syndrome

The metabolic syndrome is the dangerous combination of overweight, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and a disturbed fat metabolism. Until now, the metabolic syndrome was only known in adults, but now children are also affected. "This is not a separate disease, but a particularly dangerous combination of diseases and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases," explains Dr. Hermann Josef Kahl, pediatrician and youth spokesman and federal press officer of the professional association of pediatricians (BVKJ). In English, this combination is also called "deadly quartet" in adults, says Kahl.

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has drawn attention to the fact that the number of obese children and adolescents between the ages of five and 19 has increased tenfold worldwide in the past forty years. However, since children differ significantly from adults in terms of fat distribution, growth and proportions, a reference system was developed to determine limit values for adolescent girls and boys. The basis of the reference system is data from more than 12,000 children from eight European countries aged three to ten years. Using the system, pediatricians can quickly identify values in or above the border area and initiate suitable countermeasures if necessary.

What values are used to determine the metabolic syndrome?

In children, among other things, the hip circumference is used to assess the fat distribution to determine the metabolic syndrome. The triglyceride or HDL cholesterol values for fat metabolism also play a role in the determination. Furthermore, the fasting glucose value, i.e. the blood sugar value in the fasted state, is used for the diabetes risk and the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. According to Dr. Kahl is the goal of the reference system to prevent children and adolescents from growing up with an increased risk of illness, such as for diabetes. Childhood is a crucial phase to acquire a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and enough exercise. (fp)
