The woman's egg
In generative bisexual reproduction, the egg or oocyte is the female part of the germ cell and carries the genetic material of the mother's side. Egg cells are found in both vertebrates and plants. In humans, the egg cells originate from the woman's ovaries. The ovaries contain between 400,000 and several million immature eggs. After ovulation, the egg can be fertilized for about 12 to 24 hours by the male's sperm, which adds the male DNA.
The egg is visible to the naked eye
Starting from puberty, one egg cell develops into a fertile female germ cell as part of the woman's monthly cycle. After about 400 cycles, the woman becomes infertile and menopause begins. A mature egg cell has a diameter of 0.1 to 0.2 millimeters and is therefore just barely visible to the human eye. The process of egg formation is called oogenesis. Several factors, such as certain medications, chemicals or stress, are suspected of negatively affecting female fertility.
